Name chosen because ANZAC was already taken! Black shorts, black shirt, (and maybe Green and gold undies!) Firstly to support a great cause and when we realized we weren’t racing against real Dragons in boats we thought we’d enter, as well as to reclaim the Haka/ War cry trophy, which we initiated years ago. If we don’t beat them on the water, well Haka them on the land. Hello…. if getting Kiwis & Aussies in the same boat, side by side, together, paddling in the same direction isn’t going to be amusing enough, then teaching our Aussie Kuzzies a HAKA will be, J KIWI-ROOS are the inaugural holders and drivers behind the War cry trophy. A few years back, this rag tag crew of friends, family and Calvary Hospital staff, who had never done this before and had come out to support this event, felt a little bit intimidated, out of place by all the professional looking teams, with tents & some with their own masseuses, Carbon Fiber paddles, Corporate Logos and trendy spandex uniforms and we with our $3.00 t-shirts from “Clints”, smart sunnies and an Esky, appeared somewhat out of their depth, let alone out of place, until our fearless Pink Haired leader and organizer, Chezza said …. I feel a haka coming on GDM…thus the War Cry was born, that day we had over 100 paddlers join us in the Haka and was performed many times throughout the day, with everyone and anyone joining in…. and this year we return.... Thus the War Cry trophy was born! |
