After dark directive - Canberra Dragon Boat Association (September 2006)

The CDBA is to undertake a review of the CDBA policy on the use of boats after sundown and before sunrise. The CDBA has undertaken consultation between several statutory bodies, and in accordance with its duty of care the CDBA has determined the following:

While the review is underway, the following will apply:
  • If clubs are to venture on the water and stay after the publicised  sunrise and sunset times (published in the Canberra times everyday in the weather section), the following will apply;
  • All boats used on water must have at least one operational visible white light on the boat, switched on for the duration of the water session. responsibility for batteries for the lights will be the clubs. Although the CDBA will provide batteries, it is the club responsibility to ensure that the lights are operational. Clubs are not to take boats on the lake without operational lights.
  • All crew members are to wear PFDs (unless in a wetsuit) while on the water if paddling after the publicised sunset and/or before sunrise times.
Clubs continue to hold the responsibility for 'duty of care' for its paddlers.

Clubs are to ensure that this directive is promulgated to coaches and sweeps.
