Rockmans Fundraiser
A chance encounter brought together Angie Walter, the Coordinator of Dragons Abreast Coffs Coast and Megan, Manager of Rockmans in the Palms Centre. Whilst Angie was purchasing some clothing at Rockmans earlier in the year she mentioned she was going down to Sydney to compete at the Chinese New Year regatta at Darling Harbour with Dragons Abreast Coffs Coast team.
This got Megan thinking as she was planning a fundraiser for a local charity and she couldn’t think of a better one. Weeks of planning resulted in Megan offering Dragons Abreast Coffs Coast a 4 day discount where Rockmans offered15% off everything in the store and are encouraged customers to give a donation to Dragons Abreast Coffs Coast.
Members of Dragons Abreast Coffs Coast were in store to meet interested people and also to launch their Mother’s Day raffle which has some fantastic prizes.
This raffle will help pay for current accounts and the balance will be used to assist financially disadvantaged breast cancer survivors with their membership fees to Dragons Abreast Coffs Coast. This gesture represents the main ethos and philosophy of Dragons Abreast Australia which is participation and inclusiveness.
The fundraiser proved a great success and cemented a positive relationship between Rockmans Coffs Harbour and Dragons Abreast Coffs Coast.
Dragons Abreast Coffs Coast, or “DACC” for short, has been having fun whilst raising our profile and some funds, but more importantly, breast cancer awareness on the Coffs Coast.
We held our first fundraiser, which was a Christmas raffle and had a great time at Park Beach Plaza, our local shopping Plaza, selling tickets and telling shoppers about our group, the 34th member group, and about Dragons Abreast Australia. We had the Caloundra DVD running which created much interest. We decorated our area with pink balloons, pink feather boas, pink tinsel and even one of the dragon sarongs I bought from Caloundra. See photo, on left, Angie Walter, our Co-Ordinator and on the right is Annette Green, our trusty Treasurer.
Some of our members attended the Pink Silks Ladies Day at the Coffs Harbour Race Club and volunteered selling raffle tickets and pink ribbons, etc. Although this was not a fundraiser for our own group, it certainly was a great function to promote awareness of breast cancer on the Coffs Coast and we were delighted to help out as it raised funds Regional Cancer Services and the North Coast Cancer Institute as well as funds for the local breast cancer support group, “The Young and the Breastless”, which is facilitated by 2 of our DACC members. It was a great day and one of our members won first prize in the raffle, which was very handy as it is for accommodation for EcoPoint Myall Shores Resort.

Our next fundraiser will be a raffle for Valentine’s Day, which we are looking forward to. We have had great support from various people and members donating prizes for our raffles, which is always much appreciated.
6 of us are heading south to Chinese New Year to paddle with a composite team called “DA Ratatouille”. Our team captain, Hayley from DA Melbourne, suggested this name to incorporate the Year of the Rat and as Ratatouille is a dish of mixed vegetables as we are a dish of mixed survivors from Coffs Coast, Melbourne, Dubbo and Ballarat – great name Hayley! Wikipedia describes Ratatouille as “It was originally a poor farmer's dish, prepared in the summer with fresh summer vegetables” – sounds like us!
We are all looking forward to catching up with old DA friends, friends made at Caloundra where we paddled as “Intrepid Spirits” with Melbourne, Merimbula, Ballarat and Canada. We are also looking forward to meeting and making new DA friends, as we are the “new kids on the block”!
We look forward to seeing you all at Darling Harbour.
2008 is turning out to be a busy and fun year!
Dragons Abreast Coffs Coast formed in November 2007 – although several of our founding members have been involved in dragon boating for the last two years. We offer women on the breast cancer journey an opportunity to get fit, whilst also having fun, in a peaceful, respectful and harmonious environment.
Members of Dragons Abreast Coffs Coast recently attended Abreast in Australia in Caloundra, as part of a composite team - “Intrepid Spirits” - paddling with women from Ballarat, Melbourne, Merimbula and Vancouver, Canada. Visit http://www.dragonsabreast.com.au/Australia_2007/index.htm to read more about Abreast in Australia.
Membership of Dragons Abreast Coffs Coast is restricted to breast cancer survivors, but supporters are most welcome and encouraged to join as ‘social’ members. All paddlers are members of the Coffs Coast Dragon Boat Club. We meet for a paddle with Coffs Coast Dragon Boat Club each Sunday 7.30 for 8 am at Mylestom from the 2nd boat ramp in Mylestom, opposite the North Beach Bowling Club.
