Dragons Abreast NT – Paddlers on a Mission is based at Cullen Bay near Buzz Café, just by the Slipway – it is the first car park on your left as you come down the hill at Cullen Bay.
FIRST COME & TRY FOR 2006
Six of us collected the boats from their berths to paddle the 500 plus metre trip to the beach for our first Come & Try for 2006. As we rounded the bend to bring the boats into the beach I was absolutely floored when I looked towards the shore and saw a crowd of people. My first thought was that there was another function being held on the beach at Cullen Bay, but once the boats were beached and the crowd started wandering down, I thought, my goodness, (not really) how on earth are we going to fit all these people into two boats.
Our Come and Try’s are held on the last Thursday of each month, they are followed by a sausage sizzle and we normally get about 12 people at these sessions. So you can understand my panic when I saw at least 50 people standing on the bank. There’s a lot to be said for all that eating and drinking over Christmas. Obviously now is the time to exercise and lose the excess weight.
Once all the waivers were signed, introductions and safety talks given we loaded the boats, and took to the water to introduce them to the fun of paddling. As the boats moved away from the shore our members who could not fit into the boats rushed around organising the barbeque and someone headed for the shops to buy more sausages and drinks.
Fifty minutes later the weary, wet paddlers arrived back, and despite being hot and puffed got out of the boats with smiles on their faces saying that they had thoroughly enjoyed the paddling. Many asked when they could return for another training session.
The Dragon Boating of the NT combined Australia Day and Chinese New Year Regatta is being held on January 29 so it was very opportune to invite them all back to enter into this fun filled day and hopefully become regular paddlers with us.

The NT Sports Awards were held on 26 May at the MGM Grand Casino in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia and I am absolutely delighted to announce that Alan Culbertson, who DAA nominated for Coach of the Year at the NT Sports Awards, held last night in Darwin, has been named NT Ambassador of the Year.
Alan did not win Coach of the year – he was in excellent company with outstanding nominees. However, we are absolutely blown away to hear Alan was the recipient of the Ambassador of the Year Award which is an award that is presented by the Minister for Sport & Recreation and the recipient is selected from the nominees across the various categories.
All Dragons Abreast, not just in the NT but across Australia are thrilled with the announcement and absolutely delighted the Minister has recognized Alan’s contribution to the development of dragon boat in the NT and Beyond!

delighted to report that our application for a grant for a Community Benefit Fund grant was successful!!! Work will now commence on building our own BBQ trailer and obtaining a shade structure - we are thrilled.
We also had a very successful Australia Day weekend. Our women's team came 4th in the Australia Day corporate races whilst the mixed team that paddles under the name Arafura Abreast in the club category came equal 1st with the Arafura Dragons! We were delighted with our win and the trophy is just beautiful and doing the rounds of the various team members offices!
Pat had just finished her last chemo treatment on the Thursday before the 2003 Australia Day races. She was determined to be part of the team and we were delighted to have her as our drummer. Australia Day marked 1 year since Pat joined us!
