DRAGONS ABREAST NT INC – PADDLERS ON A MISSION

May-June 2008 newsletter

In this issue:

Michelle Hanton from Darwin was (and is) the inspiration behind Dragons Abreast. It is not surprising then that the first Dragons Abreast group took to the waters in Darwin on Lake Alexander in December 1998. These wonderful trail blazing women paddled under the name of the Northern Territory Breast Cancer Voice.

Dragons Abreast NT-Paddlers on a Mission operated under the auspices of Northern Territory Breast Cancer Voice, until June 2006, when it became an entity in its own right as a member group of Dragons Abreast Australia.

The Northern Territory is a small community who sees breast cancer organisations as having one face. For this reason at fund raising events a unified banner has been developed, incorporating the logos of the three organisations - Dragons Abreast NT-Paddlers on a Mission, Northern Territory Breast Cancer Voice and Dragons Abreast Australia. The banner signifies we are united in the fight against breast cancer in the Northern Territory .

Dragons Abreast NT-Paddlers on a Mission’s home is located in Darwin’s Cullen Bay Marina. Our two boats Sunshine and Moontime are berthed here. Training takes place up to three time a week, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5.30 – 7.00. There is also an opportunity for members to paddle out through the Cullen Bay Marina lock into Darwin’s beautiful harbour for and hours paddle every Sunday morning.

Come & Try evenings are held on the last Thursday of each month from January through to October. New survivors and supporters are encouraged to come along and ‘have a go’ and then stay on for a social barbeque and mingle with other members of our group.

Two major fundraisers are held each year. These are a Golf Ambrose in May/June and a Crab & Quail Dinner and Auction Evening in September.

Dragons Abreast NT AGM is held in March each year and the 2007 Management Committee are Pauline Deslandes-NT Coordinator, Judy Smith-Vice Coordinator, Pat Skewes-Finance, Judy Florance-Secretary, Lyn Beaton-Public Officer, Trish Greenfield-Registrar and Colleen Haydon-Fundraising.
