DRAGONS ABREAST NT INC – PADDLERS ON A MISSION
The REBIRTH OF SUNSHINE – the very first Dragons Abreast boat in Australia – was held amidst much pomp and ceremony as we celebrated her new ‘colours’ thanks to sponsor SHORELANDS.

The Business & Professional Women’s Golf Day was held on Friday 13th May, at the Palmerston Golf Club. DA NT and NT Breast Cancer Voice entered 2 teams “In the Pink” and “Dragon Slayers’” – a hilarious time was had by all! Funds from the event will be donated to Dragons Abreast by the BPW – who are just fantastic supporters of our cause!
It was discovered that Pauline has hidden talents as a golfer! Colleen’s years spent caddying have obviously paid off and Pat Hancock wasn’t half bad either. Michelle provided the entertainment! I am the most hopeless golfer out! Definitely no danger of swapping the dragon boat sweep oar for a golf club!!!
Our Dragon Slayers team consisted of Patron of DA NT – Sue Carter MLA, Toots Doyle from Speakers Corner, Susan Hanton, Treasurer NT Breast Cancer Voice and our very keen supporter Marilyn Harvey.
The In The Pink Team consisted of Pat Hancock, DA NT as well as NTBCV Vice Chair, Pauline Deslandes, NT Coordinator, Colleen Haydon & myself!

Turban making
Dragons Abreast NT have decided to make turbans to supply to Alice Springs and Darwin chemo patients after receiving a request from our chemotherapy unit for assistance. We are delighted to have received support from SPOTLIGHT, who generously donated the fabulously, softy and trendy coloured fabrics for our turban making sessions.
If any other groups would like the pattern I am confident that DA NT will be very happy to supply this and I am more than happy to facilitate and introduction to SPOTLIGHT!
DA NT feels this is something very worthwhile supporting, all patients in need of a turban will benefit, not just breast cancer patients, and we are delighted to have our community room – thanks to Tony Milhinhos – to set up as a workshop and are also grateful for the donation of a sewing machine from our local JANOME store.
My role in all of this has just been to organize the connection with SPOTLIGHT and then take the photos at the first working session held this Saturday – since I have been given the sack from all things crafty, after I managed to get glue on everything that I was not supposed to! I don’t know, that was 2 years ago and they still all remember!
DA NT has some extremely talented women in the group, who are extremely capable with the sewing machine! Watch this space for more photo’s as the NT sews a colourful array of turbans!

Photos taken at the recent Come & Try
dragon boating day held at Cullen bay Marina and followed by a sausage
sizzle. We were very pleased to enjoy the company of Edith Cooper
(DA Qld) and Jan Ross (DA Port Lincoln) as well as Claire Threadgold,
National Manager of the Encore program. |
The Chung Wah Society held a dragon boat regatta at lake Alexander. Dragons
Abreast entered a team under the name “THE BLINKIES” –
since this was a corporate novice affair and some of our members are considered
too experienced for this category The Blinkies strokes were our visually
impaired members who have less than 5% vision – in Paul’s
words “blind as bats”!
The average age of the team was 57, but that was only because we had
young Kelly at 22 to pull the average right down! This was a first ever
regatta for most of the team and everyone had a wonderful time –
very social and relaxing! Our more experienced members came along to cheer
the team, provided a wonderful lunch – which allowed us the opportunity
to use our fabulous BBQ trailer once again. Bonny Fong was in charge of
the camera and took some great shots, whilst Judy Smith and Lyn Beaton
acted as ‘guides’ on land for our two strokes Dave & Paul.
I had the honour of being the sweep, because the team was used to my voice
and our very slim Tina D’Aurizio was elected drummer as she was
the lightest! Michelle Hanton
