Beth Sowter was our representative in Canada in June 2010 at Peterborough in the International Dragon Boat Festival and was one of the lucky ones to be in a boat on the water for the poignant Flowers on the Water ceremony. Beth joined 3 members of the Devonport team Nipples on Ripples and they all joined the wonderful Guelph team BreastStrokes to race as one. Out of 74 international teams they were 20th, improving their racing time by 1 second each race except for the last one when everyone was totally exhausted - still didn't come last though"

ABOUT US:
We have been paddling since February 2008 and are based at the North Esk Rowing Club opposite the Seaport. We enjoy all the facilities at the club, including excellent gym equipment and a restaurant and bar. From this situation we can easily access the Cataract Gorge, the upper reaches of the Tamar River and the lower reaches of the North Esk River. We are also able to launch the 'Tamar Tittilator' from various ramps along the Tamar, especially at GeorgTown, Hillwood and Gravelly Beach, where we receive terrific support from the locals
The club is named 'DANTI' (Dragons Abreast Northern Tas Inc.) We hold meetings at the rowing club on the second Tuesday of each month, after paddling. Meetings are open to all members.
Training is held every Tuesday night, 5pm for a 5.30 start, at the North Esk Rowing Club Rooms, Lindsay Street. We also paddle every Sunday morning, aiming to be on the water by 9am, so be down at the Club rooms by 8.30 please.
We make regular appearances at the Duck Race, the GeorgeTown and Hillwood festivals. The Christmas Parade, regattas and paddling with our sister clubs.
Our priorities are
- getting fit
- making new friends
- having fun
DANTI's Aquatic Centre activities
- We'll be using the Hydro-therapy pool and spa for water aerobics and soft gentle exercises.
- These are aimed to develop and maintain fitness and strength.
- Sessions are led by an experienced instructor who is also a member of DANTI.
- Any breast cancer survivors and their supporters are welcome to come.
New members are always welcome.

Who Are We?
Dragons Abreast Australia is a national organization comprised of breast cancer survivors of various ages from a great variety of backgrounds, athletic abilities and interests. We are founded on the principles of participation and inclusiveness. Competitive outcome is secondary – we are winners simply by being here and able to paddle.
Dragons Abreast members provide a “Face” for the breast cancer statistics whilst spreading the message of breast cancer awareness through participation in the wonderful and strenuous sport of dragon boat racing.
High on our list of priorities is having fun, trying new things, meeting interesting people and being involved in a challenging, physical activity whilst promoting breast cancer awareness.
If you want to:
- - Get fit
- - Make new friends
- - Have fun
Then Dragon boating just might be the sport for YOU!!
Our Aims
- - To promote breast cancer awareness and education.
- - To demonstrate people can still lead a full and active life despite breast cancer.
- - To show breast cancer does not discriminate on the basis of age or race.
- - To give a ‘face’ to and personalise the statistics.
- - To be inclusive of all breast cancer survivors who wish to participate.
- - To always encourage the search for a cure.

Dragon boat racing is an aquatic sport in which a 12 metre long canoe-like boat, wide enough to sit 20 people (2 abreast) along with a sweep to steer the boat and a drummer, is paddled over a course of approximately 500 metres in length.
During races a dragon boat will feature the head and tail of a dragon, a mythological creature regarded by the Chinese as having dominion over the waters and exercising control over rainfall (so maybe we can ask our dragons to share some rain with us over this wide brown land?) |
