Western Australia Dragons Abreast - Amazons

I was very fortunate to pay a visit to our WA team “Amazons’ in early October 2005.

The team had organized workshops, a fundraising fashion parade and a fabulous dinner followed at Granita’s Restaurant in Fremantle – my thanks to our host Sam Monzu for his fantastic hospitality – the food was great!

The mighty Amazons Breast Cancer Dragon Boat Racing team have won their biggest battle ever!

After loud, colourful and fast racing at this years WA State Dragon Boat Racing Titles held in Bunbury on Sunday 20th March, the DRAGONS ABREAST WA AMAZONS competed and WON the Division 1 Womens 300m heat and final and are now STATE TITLE HOLDERS!

The Amazons competed against the Silver Streaks, a much younger and more able crew and won the 300m race in a time of 1.39.40 and won by a mere 1.11 seconds!

National Championships 2004 Perth

Once again the mighty Dragons Abreast West Australian Amazons have shown that we are not just Pretty in Pink with our recent victory at the inaugural Rockingham regatta!

The fine weather of Western Australia turned itself on once again for a truly amazing day. Three clubs competed over a short course 300m sprint series involving local clubs Cockburn, Mandurah and Fremantle Swan.

The Amazons found themselves paddling against the Cockburn Knights and the magnificent Mandurah Juniors, who have always been the Amazons nemesis. With one win each for the Amazons and the Mandurah Juniors it was down to the final race for the decider.

As clubs, supporters and spectators cheered from the beach, a bad start had left us behind but nothing could be heard on the water except the sweep's calls and the unified beat of the teams paddles hitting the clear blue sea.

The teams jostled back and forth, and with hearts in our mouths both teams crossed the finish line together. It was too close to call but when the crews arrived back on the beach the cheers and adulations from the crowd confirmed that victory was ours!

When I was later questioned about the race plan I explained that we paddled our own race and with extended training sessions in the months leading up to the event lifting our confidence, there was clearly nothing but heart pushing us over the line.

Another beautiful trophy has been added to our ever increasing collection and I have never been so proud of our team. Full credit must go to the crew's determination, commitment, skill and proving that anything is possible when you believe!
