11 members of Dragons Abreast Coffs Coast entered the Dragons Abreast category for Chinese New Year on Sunday 13 Feb. Paddling in DAA teams usually involves paddling as a composite crew which for us is tremendous fun. This year we combined with Shirley, Lorraine & Gill from Clarence Valley, Trish & Wendy from Port Macquarie and Thelma from Albury [see photos].
This year was the largest representation from our team to attend. Carol Dodds was our drummer and this was her very first regatta - as you can imagine she was very excited. It was also Thelma's first regatta and as she very rarely has the opportunity to paddle in salt water really enjoyed her experience.
We had 2 races as our own team, The Sunbirds, and the opportunity to then spread ourselves amongst the teams who had made the finals. Due to the floods in Qld & Victoria a number of paddlers withdrew which meant that all teams raced with 16 paddlers. For the finals we ensured that all teams raced with full crews - Carol was drummer for the winning team.
All of the paddlers were involved in the Flowers on the Water ceremony which saw 12 full boats participating in this very emotional ceremony.
For us as an inexperienced crew I feel that overall we were terrific! We are now inspired to stay together as a team to compete in the Dragons Abreast regatta at Caloundra in September & in Darling Harbour in October.

All Dragons Abreast Coffs Coast paddlers are members of Coffs Coast Dragon Boat Club which means we are all able to paddle together with family, friends and colleagues.
Dragons Abreast Coffs Coast formed in 2007 and is the only group in Coffs Harbour which is linked to the national body of Dragons Abreast Australia which was established in 1998. Together we enjoy many laughs as well as getting fit and paddling in a beautiful environment.
New paddlers always welcome as well as current Dragons Abreast members visiting our beautiful coastline.
