After 11 years of dragon boat paddling and at the age of 80, Dawn Worley has decided that it’s the right time to hang up her paddle.
Dawn was a founding member of Dragons Abreast Bribie Island (DABI) in 2008. She served as President for a number of years and is a staunch upholder of the DA ethos.
Prior to the forming of DABI, Dawn began her paddling career when she joined the Redcliffe Pink Snapdragons in 2005. After 3 years of travelling up and down from Bribie she researched the possibility of forming a club closer to home. Assisted by a number of other hard working survivors and supporters, this idea was brought to fruition in 2008 with the founding of DABI.
During those 11 years Dawn and devoted husband Jack of 63 years (a dedicated supporter) have had some wonderful adventures and travels. In 2005 and 2006 Dawn paddled at Darling Harbour during the Chinese New Year celebrations. She participated in International Breast Cancer regattas at Caloundra in 2007 and Peterborough (Canada) in 2010. In 2008, teaming up with DA Gold Coast at the New Zealand Nationals on Lake Pupuke, she paddled 8 x 500m heats in the Breast Cancer Challenge then narrowly won gold in the close final. The Cooloola regatta at Tin Can Bay is always a DABI favourite and Dawn participated there from 2009 to 2015. In 2010 she was part of a DABI team travelling to Saint George for the River Dragon Festival. DABI’s boat, Spirit of Bribie, accompanied them on this trip and quite an adventurous return trip was experienced when flood waters impeded their journey.
Dawn, a very community minded person, has been awarded recognition for her efforts, winning the Rotary ‘Community Services Award’ in 2009 and the ‘Seniors Achievement Award’ at the Longman Awards in 2012. Also in 2012 Dawn was awarded Life Membership of DABI.
DABI owes a debt of gratitude to Dawn who really has been the backbone of the club, constantly reminding committees over the years of the importance of keeping focus on the core values of DA.
Dawn will continue her involvement with the club and plans to join paddlers (minus her paddle) for an occasional ‘pleasure cruise’ on the beautiful Pumicestone Passage.
